Saturday is NPSL match day nine for the AFC Cleveland Royals, and the club faces off against Syracuse FC in a 5:00 pm kickoff at Stan Skoczen Stadium. This weekend will mark the second all-time meeting between the two clubs, the first resulting in a 5-1 AFC Cleveland victory in Syracuse earlier this season.
The first match between the two sides was the highest goal output for the Royals this season, featuring goals from five different players and marking the Royals’ first three-point performance of the season. One week after earning a full six points against the Fort Pitt Regiment, another win for AFC Cleveland will give the club its second league double of the season, and further narrow the gap in the Midwest East playoff race.
Syracuse FC has started to right their ship after a rough start to their inaugural season. After three straight losses, including their tie with AFC Cleveland, Syracuse FC have gone 2-1-2 in their next five matches, including an impressive 1-0 victory over first-place Dayton Dynamo, and a helpful 1-1 draw last weekend against Erie Commodores FC. The Royals will have to contain Jacob Kohlbrenner, who scored in back-to-back games against FC Buffalo, and Logan Roberts, who scored Syracuse FC’s lone goal against the Commodores.
Royals fans will also be scoreboard watching this weekend, especially tuned into a Sunday clash between the Rochester Lancers and Erie Commodores, both top-four clubs sitting above the Royals in the East table. The Commodores will also make a short trip to Buffalo Friday for a tilt against FC Buffalo.
