AFC Cleveland Royals fans can have double the fun this weekend by following the club’s two NPSL matches against conference opponents. After a busy week of travel, the Royals get to stay in Ohio with an away rematch against Dayton Dynamo Friday before hosting Erie Commodores FC Sunday.
AFC Cleveland will look to improve upon their May 13 draw against rivals Dayton Dynamo, where they conceded a 2-0 halftime lead to share points in the club’s first regular season match. Since AFC Cleveland’s home opener, the Dynamo earned wins against FC Buffalo and the Rochester Lancers, propelling them to the top of the Midwest East Conference with 7 points. The Royals head to Dayton second in the table just three points behind the Dynamo, while holding a game in hand on the first-place club. Other early East Conference results indicate this Ohio derby will have major implications for playoff positioning.
Dayton Dynamo will look to slow down red-hot Chris Cvecko, who scored twice in the last meeting between the two sides and added another goal and assist in other competitions. Coming off a 5-1 win against Syracuse FC, AFC Cleveland go into this weekend’s matches feeling like they have regained their defensive swagger to complement an offense that has scored at least 3 goals in each match against non-professional opponents.
The Royals second home match of the season will see Erie Commodores FC take part in the first game of their 2017 campaign. The Commodores finished 14 points below AFC Cleveland in the Great Lakes East Conference in 2016, a season which included a 4-2 and 2-0 loss to the reigning champions. The Commodores have an opportunity to enter the top half of the East Conference table with a win after just one match. This will be no easy task as they must defeat the Royals, who have had four matches to build fitness and chemistry, on the road.
The end of the weekend could see AFC Cleveland return to the top of the table, but the Dynamo will also compete in two weekend NPSL games as they attempt to hold the first position.
