AFC Cleveland Signs TJ Welch for 2013 Season

AFC Cleveland announces the signing of midfielder, TJ Welch, from the University of Mount Union. The college teammate of fellow Royals, Tom Beck and Phil Spagnolo, Welch signed on to attend Mount Union following a successful High School tenure in his hometown of Columbia Station, Ohio. During this time, he achieved All-Ohio, All-District, and All-Conference honors.

TJ started all but 2 games as a freshman for the Purple Raiders, scoring 3 goals and dishing 4 assists. His sophomore season proved groundbreaking as he would be named the Ohio Athletic Conference Midfielder of the year, pinned as a First-Team selection in a season where he led Mount Union in scoring and points. More recently, TJ has been a force in the North Coast Soccer League, where he’s been frequently featured on the league’s top goals scorer’s lists. He will provide AFC Cleveland another attacking option from the center of the midfield; a direction that Royals staff have focused on strengthening as they head into the 2013 season.

Andy Hoggarth, Head Coach, “TJ showed great work rate and tenacity in the tryout process and has shown the drive to play for AFC Cleveland. I’m looking forward to working with TJ and seeing him develop into a solid player for us.

Aaron McGuiness, Assistant Coach, TJ has a bit between his teeth to fill in some gaps that we needed to fill. He’s definitely proven to us that he has great ability and desire to play at this level. I look to seeing his passion and aggression in the middle of the pitch.
