AFC Cleveland has signed the versatile defender/midfielder, Shane Powell, to a 1-year contract through the 2013 NPSL season. Powell, a junior out of Wake Forest University, joins the prestigious Demon Deacon program after previous seasons spent with Providence College and Richmond University. Following a transfer from Providence, Powell saw 16 starts in 17 games with the Richmond Spiders, prior to the end of the Richmond Men’s soccer program. Now playing for nationally-renown Wake Forest coach, Jay Vidovich, Shane lands in a strong program with a solid future on the horizon.
Standing 6’3″, Shane is another addition to the Royals movement adding height and athleticism to its roster. He will more likely to be utilized as a defender, though provides the flexibility to move forward as an attacking midfielder. It was at defense and midfield where he was named First Team All-State in Delaware at Salesianum School (Wilmington, DE) where they claimed 2 State Championships during his tenure. Shane also co-captained the Delaware Olympic Developmental Team and reached the USSFA Academy Playoffs with club team, “Match Fit Chelsea. Now an AFC Cleveland Royal, Shane is not a stranger to success as he has spent most of his playing career on nationally-ranked squads as he begins his endeavor with Wake Forest.
Andy Hoggarth, Head Coach, “Shane will bring a presence to the team and will be a big asset. You know with a player coming from a program like Wake Forest that he is going to bring great ability, work ethic, and commitment.
Aaron McGuiness, Assistant Coach, “Shane is coming from some reputable programs. He is a solid defender that has good technical ability and tactical awareness. He will fit into our style of play very well.
