In recognition of the Buckeye State’s strong ties to presidential history, AFC Cleveland and Zanesville Athletic FC are proud to the announce the creation of the President’s Cup. In yet another contribution to the beautiful game in Ohio, two of the state’s top soccer teams will compete in a European-style cup competition with the spoils and a piece of hardware going to the victors.
“We’re really excited about this rivalry, AFC Cleveland owner Terry Lawriw stated. “We hope to grow this into a major event in the community.
The winners will be determined by a home and away series. Aggregate scoring will be used, which means the team with the most combined goals after two games will win the Cup. Three tie-breaking scenarios are available should the series end in a tie.
“I think the President’s Cup Derby is a great way to add special significance to the home and away series between AFC Cleveland and Zanesville Athletic FC, ZAFC owner Josh Stocker commented. “They are a good model from which to build from and we are trying to learn as much as we can from Terry and the other owners. This is a great idea that will surely bring attention and excitement to what is surely going to be a fantastic matchup.
Further details about the event, including game times and sponsors, will be released at a later date.
